On Friday, November 1st, I visited TIMAC Mentor Christine Peppers at the Stanislaus Literacy Center in Modesto where she works as the agency's Technology Coordinator. The non-profit organization offers classes and one-on-one tutoring in literacy, ESL and GED preparation at its downtown location and at various sites throughout the community.
The center was closed to students on the day of my visit -- classes are held Monday through Thursday -- but I was given a tour of the facility and met three of Chris' colleagues. While in the computer lab, Chris showed me a few of the many technology projects she's helped implement during her short tenure as Technology Coordinator.
Chris and I discussed her TIMAC project plan which focuses on training staff on the use of Google Apps, the cloud-based productivity suite to which she recently migrated the organization. Chris plans to recruit mentees based on a Google Apps skills assessment and develop a Moodle course to deliver instruction. We discussed the steps and dates outlined in her preliminary timeline and made some adjustments to her plan.
Chris has a very focused and well thought-out plan. I am excited about her project and look forward to supporting her throughout the year.
